How Often Should Beginners Train?
This is one of the most common questions new students ask when starting jiu jitsu classes in Sherman Oaks and the surrounding area, and the honest answer is: consistency matters more than volume.
Two to three classes a week is a solid starting point for most beginners. It is enough to build a real habit and see steady progress, without overwhelming your body while it adjusts to new movement patterns.
Why not train every day right away? Jiu jitsu uses muscles and joints in ways most people are not used to. Giving your body time to recover between classes helps prevent burnout and injury, especially in the first few months.
Listen to your body. Some soreness is normal, especially early on. Persistent pain, exhaustion, or dreading class are signs to scale back and rest.
Progress compounds. Two focused classes a week, done consistently over months, will take you further than sporadic bursts of training followed by long breaks. Jiu jitsu is a long game, and the beginners who stick around are the ones who pace themselves well from the start.
If you are ever unsure about your training schedule, ask an instructor. We would rather help you build a sustainable rhythm than see you burn out in month two. Check our class schedule to find a pace that works for you, or get in touch if you have questions.
