What to Expect In Your First Class
Walking into your first jiu jitsu class in Valley Village can feel intimidating, but knowing what to expect ahead of time makes it much easier.
You do not need experience. Every student on our mats started exactly where you are now. Instructors are used to working with complete beginners and will walk you through everything.
Class structure. Most classes start with a warm-up, followed by technique instruction where an instructor breaks down a specific move step by step. Students then pair up to drill the technique together. Many classes end with some live rolling, though beginners are never pressured to jump into this before they are ready.
What to wear. If you do not have a gi yet, comfortable athletic clothing works fine for your first class. We can point you toward gear once you decide to continue training.
It is okay to feel awkward at first. Jiu jitsu asks your body to move in unfamiliar ways. That feeling fades faster than most people expect, usually within the first few classes.
Everyone is there to help. From instructors to senior students, the culture on our mats is built around helping newer students improve. Nobody is thrown to the wolves.
Your first class is just that: a first step. Come with an open mind, and the rest will follow. Ready to get started? Check out our class schedule or contact us with any questions before you show up.
